Education
Departments, Undergraduate and Graduate Schools
In Tokyo Tech, freshmen education is well rounded with both basic subjects and subjects related to science and engineering. When a student becomes a sophomore, he/she chooses a specific department and gets more specialized education. Please see Undergraduate Education for details.
Tokyo Tech has six graduate schools offering excellent education and distinctive research opportunities in enhanced academic environment. Please see Graduate Education for details.
Undergraduate Education
For freshmen, departments are roughly divided into seven groups numbered from 1 to 7. The student, having been admitted to one of them, studies one year in the group, and when he/she becomes a sophomore he/she makes a choice to which department of the group he/she will belong. Group 1 is formed by all departments of the School of Science, each of Group 2 to 6 is made up of departments of the School of Engineering, and all departments of the School of Bioscience and Biotechnology are in Group 7. Characteristic of each group, therefore, is related to its consisting departments. (Please refer to those departments when choosing which group to apply for admission.)
For outline of undergraduate programs, please see Curriculum for Undergraduate Course.
For details of teaching at departments, please see Course Syllabus for Under graduate School.
Graduate Education
There are six graduate schools; Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Graduate School of Bioscience and Biotechnology, Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Graduate School of Information Science and Engineering, Graduate School of Decision Science and Technology and Graduate School of Innovation Management. Each school offers a two-year course that leads to a Master's degree followed by three more years of study and research to a Doctor's degree.

Institute Library
The Institute Library, featuring the foremost collection in Japan of journals on science and engineering, has been named since 1977 as one of the National Centers for Overseas Periodicals. *More than 2,000 worldwide journals and conference proceedings are collected every year to support and facilitate both home and abroad users. In 1998, it implemented e-library system** for enhancement of user service and convenience. The library resources can be searched through Web-based catalog.
* National Centers for Overseas Periodicals are the government-appointed libraries to be hubs for researchers with exhaustively collected and systematically classified overseas journals. The Center provides copies of articles in journals upon request. So far nine university libraries of the country have been named, covering four academic fields. In the field of science and engineering, our Institute Library and the library of the University of Kyoto have been appointed.
**As a project of e-library system that has been advanced by the five universities in Japan, Tokyo Tech has been pioneering in the development of computerized library service since 1998.
