Employment or Working Visa

1. Professor
Permitted activities: Research activities, research guidance or education at universities, equivalent educational institutions or technical colleges (Koto Senmon Gakko).
Period of stay: 3 years, 1 year or 6 months

2. Artist
Permitted activities: Arts-related activities that provide income, including music, the fine arts, literature, etc. (excluding those activities described in the Entertainer category).
Period of stay: 3 years, 1 year or 6 months

3.Investor/Business Manager
Permitted activities: Activities to commence the operation of international trade or other business, to invest in international trade or other business and to operate or manage that business, or to operate or manage international trade or other business on behalf of foreign nationals, including foreign corporations, who have begun such an operation or have invested in such a business (excluding the operation or management of businesses which is not permitted without the legal qualifications described in the Legal/Accounting Service category).
Period of stay: 3 years, 1 year or 6 months

4.Legal/Accounting Services
Permitted activities: Legal or accounting work which is required to be performed by attorneys recognized as Foreign Law Specialists (Gaikokuho Jimubengoshi) under the Foreign Lawyers Law, Certified Public Accountants (Gaikoku Konin Kaikeishi) under the Accountant Law or those with other legal qualifications.
Period of stay: 3 years, 1 year or 6 months

5.Medical Services
Permitted activities: Medical treatment which is required to be performed by physicians, dentists or those with other legal Japanese qualifications.
Period of stay: 1 year or 6 months

6.Researcher
Permitted activities: Research based on a contract with a public or private organization in Japan (excluding the activities described in the Professor category).
Period of stay: 1 year or 6 months

7.Instructor
Permitted activities: Language instruction and other education at elementary schools, junior high schools, high schools, schools for the blind, handicapped children's schools, advanced vocational schools (Senshu Gakko), vocational schools or the other educational institutions equivalent to vocational schools in facilities and curriculum.
Period of stay: 1 year or 6 months

8.Engineer
Permitted activities: Services which require technological skill and/or knowledge pertinent to physical science, engineering or other natural science fields, based on a contract with a public or private organization in Japan (excluding the activities described in the Professor, Investor/ Business Manager, Medical Services, Researcher, Instructor, Intra-Company Transferee and Entertainer categories).
Period of stay: 1 year or 6 months

9.Specialist in Humanities/International Services
Permitted activities: Services which require knowledge pertinent to jurisprudence, economics, sociology or other human science fields or services which require specific ways of thought or sensitivity based on experience with foreign culture based on a contract with a public or private organization in Japan (excluding the activities described in the Professor, Artist, Journalist, Investor/ Business manager, Legal/Accounting Services, Medical Services, Researcher, Instructor, Intra-Company Transferee and Entertainer categories).
Period of stay: 1 year or 6 months

10.Intra-Company Transferee
Permitted activities: Activities by personnel who are transferred to business offices in Japan for a limited period of time from business offices which are established in foreign countries by public or private organizations with head offices, branch offices or other business offices in Japan and who engage at these business offices in the activities described in the Engineer or Specialist in Humanities/ International Services category.
Period of stay: 1 year or 6 months

11.Entertainer
Permitted activities: Theatrical or musical performances, sports or any other form of show business (excluding those activities described in the Investor/Business Manager category).
Period of stay: 1 year, 6 months or 3 months

12.Religious Activities
Permitted activities: Missionary and other religious activities conducted by members of foreign religious organizations.
Period of stay: 3 years, 1 year or 6 months

13.Journalist
Permitted activities: News coverage and other journalistic activities conducted on the basis of a contract with a foreign journalistic organization, such as a foreign newspaper company, news agency, broadcasting station, documentary movie company, etc.
Period of stay: 3 years, 1 year or 6 months

14.Skilled Labors
Permitted activities: Services that require industrial techniques or skills belonging to special fields on the basis of a contract with a public or private organization in Japan. Applicants must fulfill certain conditions concerning personal history and work status.
Period of stay: 1 year or 6 months
