Japan is full of taxis (takushii). To catch a taxi, you can go to the taxi stands (takushii-noriba) on major streets or in front of subway and train stations. You can also wave taxis down (note that in Japan traffic drives on the left). You will see a little green or red light in the lower left side of the front window. If the light is red, it means the taxi is available. If the light is green or turned off, it means that the taxi is occupied or off duty. Japan taxi drivers usually allow three or four passengers. When the cab drivers stops to pick you up or drop you off, the rear left side door will automatically swing open. If you do not speak Japanese, have your destination written out in Japanese characters for the driver. Once you arrive at your destination pay the amount on the front meter. Tipping is not necessary, nor is it expected in Japan. If you need a receipt say, ¡°Ryoshusho onegaishimasu¡± and a receipt will be printed out with the fare, the cab number, and the phone number of the cab company so that you can retrieve any forgotten item. You can also purchase taxi cards (takushii kaado) for a set amount of credit.
