TOKYO BIG SIGH

Japan boasts
the worldĄŻs second largest cosmetic market only after the
U.S.A. The market size reached a total of JPY 1,499.2 billion
- ex-factory (US$ 12.5 billion / Euro 9.4 billion) in 2006
according to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
Of special note is the extraordinarily huge esthetic salon
market and its wide distribution channels. The market run
up to US$ 3.3 billion / Euro 2.5 billion in 2006 and the
number of esthetic salons counted over 18,000. With its
attractive and energetic market, Japan leads the Asian beauty
market. Successful introduction of your products into the
Japanese marketplace may open up doors to the East Asian
markets.
The Beautyworld Tokyo fair attracted 49,592 visitors for
the 3-day period. As well as the attendees from beauty-related
industry such as esthetic and nail salons, Spa facilities,
importers, distributors and manufacturers, the fair lured
potential customers from various sectors including hotel
& resort facilities, medical institutions and apparel industry.
According to the visitor questionnaire, 65.8% answered that
they have a right of product purchasing or an influence
on final decision.
These high-quality trade visitors contributed lively and
business-like atmosphere throughout the fair period. Moreover,
more than 95 % visitors are planning to come back to the
2008 fair.
One major factor of the growth of import cosmetics is the
deregulation of import cosmetics implemented in 2001 that
meets the international standards. Prior approval for each
product is notrequired, so products containing ingredients
already approved in Japan can be imported by just making
a filing with the local prefectural government. With the
new regulation, it becomes much easier to enter the Japanese
market.
