In Tokyo, a parent may now carry two children under age 6 on specially equipped bicycles, following a revised traffic regulation.
Under the rule that takes effect today, one child can sit in a front seat while a second child rides in a seat on the back.
Previously, an adult could carry two children only if one was strapped to the rider's back.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Public Safety Commission revised the regulation after the National Police Agency recommended lifting the ban on bicycles that meet specific safety requirements for structural strength and braking performance.(
