Ninja Museum is also called Iga-ryu Ninja Museum that used to be the house of a local clan in Iga which was moved to Ueno Park. The exterior of the house looks to be nothing extraordinary, just a simple farm house with a thatched roof. Although it looks like a normal thatched-roof farmhouse with nothing special about it, various devices and tricks for defense are hidden throughout the house. In the museum, kunoichi (female ninja) act as guides, explaining hidden doors, secret passageways, hidden compartments, etc. and letting you experience them.
A Kunoichi (A female Ninja) will show you around the house showing these devices, such as secret places for collecting objects and hidden doors. Other facilities include Ninja Experience Plaza and Ninja Experience Hall & Ninja History Hall. In Ninja Experience Plaza, visitors can try some Ninja techniques like a throwing-knife, and in Ninja Experience Hall, real Ninja tools are displayed. They also provide Ninja shows that are very popular (separate fees apply).
The small but excellent Iga Ninja Museum consists of a ninja residence with revolving walls, trap doors and hidden compartments, exhibition halls displaying ninja tools, gadgets and weapons and a demonstration zone with spectacular shows featuring ninja skills and real weapons.
Exhibits come with explanatory signs in Japanese and English, while paper sheets with English explanations are available for the ninja residence. The shows are held in Japanese only, but most of the action speaks for itself.
The Iga-ryu Ninja Museum is divided into three zones: Virtual Ninja House, Virtual Ninja Experience, and Virtual Ninja Traditions. The Virtual Ninja House is full of wonderful gimmicks, such as the dondengaeshi, shikakedo(trick door), and nukemichi(secret passage). The Virtual Ninja Experience zone next door displays about 400 ninjatools, including the nawabashigo, makibishi (small spiked objects that are scattered on the ground to obstruct an enemy's movement), mizugumo (devices worn on the feet to walk on water), and shuriken(throwing blades). At the Virtual Ninja Traditions zone, visitors can learn about the history of ninjaand look at documents and other material. It gives people an idea of the lives of the ninja and their wisdom.
